Alex Levin is the owner and operator of Princeton Electrical Makeover and has over 17 years’ experience providing electrician services to the greater New Jersey region in the United States. Alex has seen a lot change in both his industry and his customer base over nearly 2 decades he has operated, and he has decided to share some of his insights with us about working as an electrician.
Alex was kind enough to answer the following questions for us.
How did you get started as an electrician?
Answer: I actually started as an HVAC tech after graduating from HVAC tech school. After one year of being an HVAC TECH, I got started as a helper electrician doing Sub and Power Station new construction.
I became a foreman electrician after 5 years and felt that I needed more education and went to electrical engineering evening school. I received my electrical engineering degree in 2003 and continued to work as an electrician.
What is the story behind the creation of Princeton Electrical Makeover?
Answer: After spending about 15 years of being in the electrical, construction and engineering industry and having a very deep knowledge of electricity, I decided to form my own business with a concentration on residential work and most importantly, to help and educate homeowners.
What were some challenges you faced early-on, and how did your business overcome them?
Answer: My biggest challenge was how to get my first client. So I did some work for a friend and that brought in more referrals.
In your opinion, what do you think sets your services apart from other electricians?
Answer: We have a team of highly educated technicians who are trained by the owner who has an electrical engineering degree.
What are some tips people can use to prevent avoidable electrical issues in their home?
Answer: The best way is to call us for one-time inspection of the entire electrical system in your home.
Are there any plans or considerations to expand the business and/or your services in the future?
Answer: Absolutely
What advice would you give a young person who was considering a career as an electrician?
Answer: It is a great profession. A skilled electrician can earn a very nice salary, but like anything worth having, it takes time and could entail a long process.
