Prepare to Be Captivated by Matthew Morgan’s New EP, ‘Timepiece’

Matthew Morgan’s new 10-track EP Timepiece released on October 20th. Through this release, the Columbus-based folk artist is making waves in the music industry with raw storytelling, tackling issues like social justice, diversity, equal rights, and the effects of the pandemic.

The singer-songwriter solidifies his stance with Timepiece. The album is more than just music; it narrates stories that resonate deeply in our current era. Addressing issues such as LGBTQI+ rights, Black Lives Matter, and equality, the record explores the fabric of our post-pandemic society. With his tenor and the rich backing of acoustic and orchestral melodies, Morgan creates a truly immersive experience.

“The song ‘Timepiece’ tells the true story of two boys who had their friendship cut short by parents who couldn’t accept their love for each other,” Morgan explains. “Our world should celebrate love in all its many forms!” The lyrics reflect how “the heart doesn’t lie; it just counts up the wishes in each person’s mind. It’s a timepiece of spotless design, but it’s not always on time.”

Musically, Timepiece creates a collage of melancholic sentiments with an optimistic overtone. Morgan’s tenor voice is supported by acoustic richness and orchestral instrumentation, resulting in an intimate, captivating emotional journey. The pedal steel guitar work and the lush strings add layers of sonic depth.

Timepiece is not just an album—it is a call to action, an invitation to explore complex societal issues through the lens of heartfelt music. This record holds powerful messages and thought-provoking themes, uniquely impacting society.

Morgan ignites his passion for social justice through the music he creates. Each song is infused with earnest reflections on injustice and acceptance, resonating with listeners of all backgrounds. The track “The Good Life” echoes with the poignant lines: “Go ahead, try to rest now, the work is never done. Not ’til justice flows like waters, peace like a rising sun.” Morgan uses Timepiece to voice a universal understanding of the struggle for equal rights and racial violence.

It took Morgan over three years to create Timepiece while collaborating with producer Jay Alton and many expert instrumentalists, including violinist Chris Shaw, pedal steel player Chris Bosca, and cellist Jill Crist. The album was mixed by Alton and mastered by the renowned Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Michael Bublé) at Magic Garden Mastering.

With its blend of indie folk stylings and inspiring lyrical themes, Timepiece is a tour de force in heartfelt storytelling, unafraid to explore issues of diversity, equality, and social change. The music pulls you in from start to finish, like conversing with an old friend. Only after you’ve signed on do you realize the strength of the message.

Morgan released his debut album in 2012 with Chicago’s acoustic indie label CAUDog Records, which saw him immediately going on tour and playing sold-out shows. Seeking a more introspective sound, he recorded a solo EP in 2015 called Empathy for Inanimate Objects, which garnered critical acclaim.

With Timepiece marking Morgan’s first full release since 2015, he displays his maturity as a songwriter and storyteller. Timepiece officially dropped on October 20th and is available on all major streaming platforms. You can anticipate an album that skillfully combines inspiring musical artistry, social commentary, and captivating narratives. Prepare to be moved.
