Get to Know the CEO

Today, Kubicek is a CEO with a wealth of proud achievements on her resume. But her success wasn’t a given and Kelly worked hard to turn what could have been seen as challenges into opportunities.

Her unique approach, which prizes the ‘human’ aspect of HR, has made her an appealing thought leader for the next generation of HR professionals. She was recently invited to join the prestigious Forbes Council, an invite-only business organization that allows C-suite executives and successful entrepreneurs to share their skills, learn, and network. In the short time she’s been a member; she has already published five well-received articles on HR-adjacent topics.

At the same time, her consultancy has been on a healthy upward trajectory, her own health has been a struggle. After having a malignant tumor removed, she went through several weeks of chemotherapy, struggling through twice-weekly treatments but continued plugging away and helping her client’s companies thrive.

Her personal struggles do much to reinforce one of her foundational beliefs about HR, which is approaching employees from a place of empathy. “You never know what someone else is going through, so treat them with care, respect, and an open mind,” she said.

The most important lessons that Kubicek imparts to her clients are developing, nurturing, and believing in your people. An employee-employer relationship is not so different than any other relationship, and that’s what she believes that so many companies fail to recognize. The effort toward your employees’ development and engagement is an ongoing one that starts when you hire them.

Many companies, especially upper-level firms such as those on the Fortune 500 list, woo their employees strongly, but that effort tapers off once the new hire signs a contract. “You have to sell to your own team why they should love working for you, but that’s very complex,” Kubicek shared.

Streamlining Government Payroll

Among Kubick’s proudest achievements is an initiative she ran for the State of Nebraska. In some experts’ opinions, the task she was given was nearly impossible. Kubicek and her consultants were asked to consolidate 17 departments of state employees — totaling about 9,000 workers — into one streamlined system.

The purpose of the new system was so that a new payroll system could be implemented, one that would streamline a fragmented system that had been running with work-around after work-around for years. It was a daunting task, but one that Kubicek was able to complete in less than one year.

Her successful program resulted in a savings of thousands of dollars in salaries and administrative costs for the State of Nebraska, which could then re-allocate those funds to places they were desperately needed.

Of course, a professional like Kubicek found the best part of the project was the satisfaction she got from helping others, and we can’t wait to see what she does next.
