From Cleveland’s Streets to Shaping Dreams: Wayne Winsley’s Remarkable Journey

The story of Wayne Winsley is filled with immense struggles, an inspiring turning point and a passion for empowering the next generation.

As a kid in Cleveland, Ohio, Wayne was raised by his great-grandmother, who provided him with love and care. However, when his great-grandmother was too old to care for him, Wayne found himself in an orphanage, facing a daunting and uncertain future. His early years were marred by academic toils, as he stumbled through school, even failing the eighth grade. With limited resources and no money to his name, Wayne felt the heavy weight of despair looming over him.

But life has a way of surprising us, and Wayne’s life took a remarkable turn through one pivotal conversation. A friend’s father shared a profound piece of wisdom that changed the trajectory of Wayne’s life forever: “Always strive for excellence.” Inspired by these words and wanting to strive for excellence, Wayne made the decision to return to school and embark on a journey of self-improvement and achievement.

Wayne’s determination paid off, and he not only graduated from high school but also served his country honorably in the Navy, completing two tours. However his pursuit to excellence didn’t stop there. In 2012, he ran for Congress in Connecticut, eager to make a difference on a larger scale. Simultaneously, he dedicated two decades of his life to radio broadcasting, using his platform to inspire, educate and motivate countless listeners. In everything he did and sought after, Wayne was not afraid to fail.

Another big moment along Wayne’s path was his involvement with the employment site Monster’s  “Making it Count” program. This program, aimed at inspiring students nationwide to pursue their dreams, gave him an even more distinct purpose. However, when the program ceased operations in 2012, Wayne’s need to aid students in any way possible drove him to take matters into his own hands.

In 2015, Wayne founded Brave Enough to Fail, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire, educate and provide financial aid to students. With an unyielding belief in the potential of every young person, Wayne and his organization have reached over 30,000 students, awarding $100,000 in scholarships. Remarkably, every scholar supported by Brave Enough to Fail has gone on to graduate from college, which serves as proof of the organization’s overwhelming impact.

Brave Enough to Fail offers a wide range of services, including a powerful student motivational program and access to educational resources. Additionally, the organization provides crucial financial aid to students facing economic barriers. Two signature programs, “Be the Boss of Your Dream” and “Boss Academy,” stand at the heart of Wayne’s mission to empower young individuals.

“Boss Academy,” a 12-session course, equips students with the tools they need to take charge of their dreams. It covers essential topics like setting ambitious goals, stepping out of comfort zones, strategic planning and the perseverance required to overcome obstacles. Wayne also teaches critical life skills, including effective communication and financial literacy.

Boss Academy, which Wayne initiated three years ago, has become a vital part of Norwalk Public Schools, deeply ingrained in their educational culture and running throughout the year. This commitment to long-term engagement sets Brave Enough to Fail apart, ensuring that students have access to the resources and mentorship they need to succeed.

What sets Brave Enough to Fail apart is that it’s the only nonprofit in the United States that seamlessly combines motivation, education and financial aid. This holistic approach addresses the multifaceted challenges that students face, providing them with a comprehensive support system to achieve their dreams.

He aims to raise awareness and expand the reach of Brave Enough to Fail to more schools, more people and more businesses. His “Tips and Tricks” initiative involves providing experts who share their knowledge and experiences through 15-minute videos, effectively leveling the playing field and opening up new career paths for students across the nation.
