In the early days of his career, Looper worked in high-pressure sales environments. Success depended on being present. He recalls that if you weren’t in the office, you weren’t making money.

That mentality carried over into his nonprofit work. People began to rely on him because they knew he’d be there. That presence became his professional brand. Over time, that reliability translated into career growth, and he received four promotions in five years.

Looper now encourages others to think of themselves as a brand. Every day, he says, you’re building your professional identity. Show up, stay focused, and be the person people can depend on.

Managing supportive housing means managing unpredictability. Many tenants have experienced trauma, and Looper understands the impact that trauma can have on behavior, trust, and engagement. He believes it is not just about giving someone a roof over their head, but about helping them feel safe, heard, and human again.

Camlo Looper has completed extensive training in trauma-informed care and motivational interviewing, tools he uses to navigate difficult tenant relationships. He frequently blocks off full hours, sometimes more, for one-on-one meetings with tenants who are struggling.

He prefers to close out his week every Friday. It gives him mental clarity and helps him stay accountable.

He also believes in empowering his team through delegation. Sometimes he delegates because he wants someone to grow. Other times, he needs to manage workload and ensure progress. Either way, it’s about developing people.

When making difficult calls, whether about tenant behavior, policy enforcement, or operational challenges, he factors in how decisions will affect the people involved. He always asks himself who will be impacted and how they can be included in the process.

Looper believes that today’s leaders must be guided by moral clarity. Integrity, he says, is non-negotiable. People will follow you through difficult times if they trust your character.

He adds that resolve is equally important. Leaders are often faced with choices that won’t please everyone. What matters is having the courage to stand by a decision once it’s been made and the humility to revisit it if necessary.

Anticipating future challenges is also key to Looper’s leadership. Whether it’s shifts in local housing policy or fluctuations in funding, he tries to stay one step ahead.

You can’t lead just for today, he says. You have to be thinking about six months, a year, even five years down the road.
