Removing toxins to create healthier homes: Meet TrueEnviro

Indoor air quality isn’t often something we give much thought to; we like to assume the air in our homes and offices is safe to breathe. However, things like mold, allergens and bacteria can often go unnoticed, wreaking havoc on our health.

Whether you have constant allergies and aren’t sure why, or have simply been feeling a bit off, checking the health of your home or business – places in which you spend a lot of your life – might be something to consider.

Green Home Solutions TrueEnviro is a business specialising in indoor environmental  services. It is operated by CEO Justin J. MacNaughton, who founded the company with a goal to help improve indoor air quality across the U.S.

Justin’s motto, “We Care About the Air You Breathe”, showcases his passion for indoor environmental health and wellbeing. While air quality – and water quality, for that matter – isn’t something we often consider, Justin believes it is vital to maintain for our health, as we spend up to 80% of our time indoors.

We interviewed Justin to learn more about his unique business and what was involved in establishing it.

What was your background prior to launching Green Home Solutions True Enviro?

I spent five years as co-founder and managing director of GreenCar Hawaii.  A first of its kind, eco-friendly car share service for the hospitality industry, partnered with Hyatt, Hilton, Outrigger and boutique properties on Oahu and Kauai.

I also spent about a decade working as a commercial real estate agent with a focus on helping clients procure and divest from multi-family properties. Before that I spent five years as a sales representative for action sports brands O’Neil, Arnette and Ocean & Earth.

What are your most popular services?

About 80% of our client work is focused on mold removal and water, or moisture control issues. However, Green Home Solutions TrueEnviro also provides indoor environmental services to treat air quality issues like odor and microbial disinfection affecting residential and commercial spaces.

What are the best parts of the work that you do?

The best part about the work we do is being able to improve the indoor health of our customers’ homes, businesses and buildings. We really do care about the air you breathe, and we take great pride in being able to help our customers feel more at ease regarding their indoor wellbeing.

At what point did you decide to get involved with the franchise, and was this a challenging process?

I was introduced to the brand, concept and leadership team in 2016. By 2017 we had committed to developing franchises across a number of locations – currently Southern California, Atlanta and Twin Falls, Idaho.

It has been a challenging process – but then, developing any business is difficult. The franchise model was new to us, and came with a number of unique challenges. Our team rose to meet these challenges and we enjoy being able to create and work for a strong, positive work culture that adds real value to our customers’ daily lives.

What healthy home gift ideas do you recommend?

A common issue we find in most homes with mold concerns is elevated moisture or humidity levels. A simple hygrometer can help protect a home from potential future mold and bacteria issues. Here is an example. It’s a unique, yet really practical gift.

What is the dirtiest part of a home?

You might think the bathroom or kitchen sink – and sure, both are pretty dirty and susceptible to mold and odors – but the biggest culprit is typically our cell phones. Think about it; you’re carrying it around all day, resting it on your desk, setting it by the register while you’re paying for coffee, gathering more bacteria with each event of the day.

Alright, you might say that a cell phone isn’t actually “part of a home” – then, to be specific, crawl spaces are probably the worst. This is an area that is generally overlooked or forgotten about, but it can be a real problem area. Because of the ‘stacking effect’ of air which rises up through our homes, approximately 60% of the indoor air we breathe originates from the crawl space. And if it’s full of mold, well, you get the picture.

Rubbish, pests and excess moisture can make a crawl space a haven for mold and bacteria, resulting in toxins which gradually rise up and enter the air inside our homes. This can have negative effects on indoor air quality and potentially result in health issues.

Thankfully, our company can address these issues and resolve them, leaving homes clean and healthy to live in.
