Johanna Altman’s Daily Wellness Routine: A Peek Into Her Health Habits

From real estate to health and wellness, Johanna Altman, best known for her appearance in Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles, is here to share her best-kept wellness secrets. Johanna integrates both a Western and Eastern medicinal approach to wellness. As a woman who grew up in Southern California, Johanna was exposed to various cultures’ approaches to health and well-being.

By incorporating Western and Eastern medicine into her life, Johanna is reinventing wellness. She encourages people to do what feels right for their bodies, showing that one can get the best of both worlds without being restrained into a “box.”

The Benefit of NAD

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a coenzyme that helps with gene function, repair, and energy metabolism. It also helps the body recover from injury and disease by lowering inflammation and supporting the immune system. NAD has been found to help prevent aging-related diseases, even boosting one’s energy. This supplement is beneficial for various issues and can serve as a preventative supplement.

NAD can be taken as an oral supplement or through an IV infusion. Johanna generally recommends the IV administration route. However, NAD can also be boosted through one’s diet. She shares that “foods rich in niacin, such as turkey, chicken, peanuts, and avocados, can help boost NAD+ levels.

Additionally, consuming fermented foods like yogurt and kombucha can also contribute, as they contain helpful bacteria that promote NAD+ production.”

She has seen personal benefits, such as increased energy, since using NAD. Using NAD is just one aspect of promoting overall health, yet it can significantly benefit many people

Circadian Rhythm: Keep That Sleep Schedule Consistent

Most animals have a circadian rhythm, the body’s natural mechanism for alertness and sleepiness from day to night. Humans’ circadian rhythms operate on a 24-hour clock. Light is the primary influence of the circadian rhythm.

With that in mind, circadian rhythms are more easily thrown off balance in a digital age. At times when it’s supposed to be dark (AKA sleepy time for your body), we have things like laptops, phones, TVs, and lamps that tell our bodies it’s daytime! Blue light produced by screens also interferes with the body’s ability to produce melatonin, a critical hormone for feeling sleepy.

Johanna recommends that people try to reduce screen time by a few hours for bed or wear blue-light-blocking glasses that can reduce the eyes’ exposure to blue light. She also suggests getting outside for at least 30 to 60 minutes daily. This way, the body can get a better sense of when there is daylight outside.

Most importantly, Johanna emphasizes going to sleep at a regular time. Since the body operates on a cycle, just one day of sleeping at a different time can drastically reduce one’s sleep cycle. Having inconsistent or low-quality sleep could lead to depression, sleep disorders, obesity, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Prioritizing how you sleep is a critical component of well-being.

Promoting Gut Health: A Vital System for Great Health

Johanna utilizes the wisdom from traditional Eastern diets to promote a healthy gut. Our gut, filled with a microbiome of various beneficial bacteria, must be maintained to have healthy digestion and good energy.

Eastern foods such as “Korean kimchi and Japanese miso to Eastern European kefir” can provide the healthy bacteria necessary to support the gut’s microbiome.

Diets that emphasize eating whole foods and consuming lots of fiber have evidence supporting their ability to heal the gut. Modern-day processed sugars and refined carbohydrates reduce the population of bacteria in the stomach, which is undesirable for optimal gut function.

After consuming a lot of fiber, Johanna saw a huge difference in staying full, having consistent energy throughout the day, and being regular. However, Johanna notes the importance of intuitively listening to your body. Some people need different things at different times. “Tailoring your diet to your personal digestive needs is key to achieving the best results,” she says
