IBA President Umar Kremlev: Politics Have No Place in Sports

The International Boxing Association (IBA) president, Umar Kremlev, is determined to advance the sport of boxing internationally, according to recent reports. During a press conference held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Kremlev stated that politics should be kept out of sports and emphasized the importance of cooperation and compromise in the boxing sport. The IBA intends to assist athletes and National Federations in the development of the sport, by providing each National Federation with between $50,000 and $100,000 following the submission of a development plan.

According to the EU Reporter, Kremlev also stressed the interaction between the IBA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), highlighting the need for each organization to concentrate on its own duties without interfering with those of athletes or the IOC. The IBA is the only international organization that oversees boxing and is respected by 205 nations, according to Kremlev, who questioned the relevance of an “alternative boxing association” established by the US and UK in a “garage.”

The popularity of boxing is evidenced by the 120 countries that have applied to host the finals, and Kremlev emphasized that the IBA’s goal is to assist athletes rather than restrict them. European athletes have contacted Kremlev to address current issues in the sport in everyone’s best interests. The IBA is dedicated to the growth of boxing and is collaborating with other organizations while concentrating on its duties, according to Kremlev.

In addition, Kremlev recently pledged to increase the prize money for future women’s world championships, starting with the event that took place in Delhi, India, in April 2023. He stated that the prize money for the event, which was $2.4 million, would serve as a benchmark for future women’s world championships. Kremlev’s pledge to increase prize money highlights the IBA’s commitment to the development of boxing and its athletes, especially women.
