Growth Mindset Is The Key To Doing Well in the DSA Interview and Beyond

The DSA (Direct School Admission) Interview in Singapore is a key milestone for primary 6 students to obtain the opportunity to enter a school of their choice using a talent area that they are passionate in. However, what is even more important is that it represents a unique avenue of early exposure into the world of interviews, and this is an invaluable experience for our young talents. Tapping into this opportunity to build up a growth mindset will reap rewards beyond school.

As an Interview Coach, I have had the opportunity to work with many young students who are preparing for their first interview. However, it is not just about performing well during that one particular interview. At this age, doing well in an interview is also very much about building their mindset and their capacity for taking on high stress moments. This then impacts their ability to communicate their thoughts clearly and confidently, which is a skill they will have to use in a variety of situations in the future including making presentations and pitches.

Many of my upper secondary and junior college clients who have had early exposure to the interview process (DSA is one of the most common early opportunities available) become far more confident in their interview skills and show an early aptitude for tackling nerve wrecking interviews for scholarships and university entrance requirements. As one junior college student shared with me “I remember thinking that if I could do this (attend an interview) when I was only 12 years old, I can definitely do it now. The interview is now a process I no longer dread”.

The DSA process is not for everyone, but for those who have chosen to give this path a try, proper coaching and encouragement can make a big difference to the child’s viewpoint of tackling difficult situations. Try to praise the effort, focus, strategies and improvement. At the end of the day, a resilient child will be able to tackle future challenges in a much more positive manner.

A huge part of the battle is won when the child has a growth mindset. My focus as an Interview Coach is to empower each child with interview skills that will set them up for success beyond school. At Discovering Potential, we coach our clients from the inside out. We learn about them, their personalities and preferred communications styles. Then, we start to augment their inherent abilities by providing strategies on how to elevate their communication skills and make their points stronger and more effective.  But most importantly, we encourage each child to learn, improve, and build a passion for becoming a good communicator.
